This one is a fine line to walk for me. Growing up in my family, we were taught to assume that others have good intentions. It may work when you are in a collective society where people look out for each other and aim for harmony. It takes me some counselling sessions to learn that labelling certain behaviours or individuals can save time and energy. Sometimes we have to do that to protect ourselves. I see that the keywords here are "in ways that don't stand up to the truth". Still, the truth is always easy or clear-cut.
