As a fellow Thai, I can resonate. Ithipol/Alex tries to do his best and prove his worth.

It would shock him that his colleagues do not appreciate his work ethic. Why? He does not try to out work anyone. Perhaps, he is the type of person who always does his best. I read that he does not want to be a burden. The poor guy even scheduled the time to help Joe and anticipated he would get little to no support from another. Your mentorship and skills in navigating a supportive work culture can make or break this guy. My question to you is, what will you do?
